Microscope enhanced dentistry is one of the newest changes in modern dentistry and is easily the most important change in providing better quality care to our patients. Approximately 15 years ago, dental microscopes were introduced to the field of Endodontics (root canal therapy). Today, every Endodontic specialty program in the US requires competence in the use of the microscope prior to graduation and currently more than 80% of Endodontists use the dental microscope in their work. It was only natural that the technology and use of the microscope would spread into other fields so that General Dentists and Prosthodontists (crown specialist) could enjoy the same benefits with improved clinical results for our patients.

The dental microscope allows a dentist better illumination and better magnification in order to provide the most precise dentistry possible. There is a long learning curve in adapting to the use of the microscope but the greatly improved vision allows for better quality restorations that not only satisfies our goals as a professional but also gives the patient greater satisfaction in the results we achieve. Restorations done with the microscope will look better and last longer as they can replicate natural tooth structure more accurately. We can also treat problems in a much more conservative fashion saving the patient unnecessary expense and tooth loss.

There are times in the Dental profession when new technology changes our profession from that point forward. The use of the dental microscope has changed our techniques forever and dentistry will only improve over the next decade as the use of these magnification tools become commonplace in all dental offices.
